Too cold outside but you still want to learn to row? Come learn to row indoors with DC Strokes! Get an introduction to the team sport of rowing while meeting new friends and getting in shape to beat the winter blues.
DC Strokes offers a gay-friendly environment and a welcoming community for all. The Winter Learn to Row (WLTR) Program is designed for people with no previous rowing experience and teaches the basics from square one. All WLTR sessions include: land training on ergometers, personal attention from coaches to help you develop your form and rowing skills, a question-and-answer session, as well as a review of lessons learned, at the conclusion of each day's class.
Developed and led by USRowing Level II certified coach Rachel Freedman, the program is designed to introduce newcomers to the sport the basics of indoor rowing. Coach Rachel will work with individuals to fine-tune technique, build power and cardio endurance, and find speed.
Rowers should expect to:
- Learn the fundamentals of the rowing stroke and body mechanics
- Learn rowing and equipment terminology
- Learn the correct use of rowing machines, known as ergometers or ergs
WLTR runs Feb 28 through Mar 17 (6 classes). Classes are Thursday evenings from 7:15-8:00pm and Sunday mornings from 10:30am-11:30am.
All classes are dedicated to WLTR students, with an emphasis on teaching the basic technique of the rowing stroke on an indoor rowing machine (also known as an erg). Participants will learn proper rowing technique, and how to be efficient and effective through the rowing stroke. Rowing is a full body workout that will increase your cardio capacity, build strength, and increase mobility and flexibility. On the Sunday classes you will have a chance to meet current DC Strokes members and join in their workout.
When you sign up for WLTR, it is recommended that you come to all 6 classes. Each class builds on technique you learn in the previous class.
Registration cost is $35, paid in advance.
- Payable by personal check, credit or debit card.
- Please note that you do not need to be a member of DC Strokes to sign up for WLTR
- Once the class begins, no refund is available
All Learn to Row sessions are located at the Anacostia Community Boathouse:
